1 Thessalonians 5

But of the times and moments, brethren, you need not, that we should write to you:

De temporibus autem, et momentis, fratres, non indigetis ut scribamus vobis.

Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι,

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord shall so come as a thief in the night.

Ipsi enim diligenter scitis quia dies Domini, sicut fur in nocte, ita veniet:

αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται.

For when they shall say: Peace and security; then shall sudden destruction come upon them, as the pains upon her that is with child, and they shall not escape.

cum enim dixerint : Pax et securitas : tunc repentinus eis superveniet interitus, sicut dolor in utero habenti, et non effugient.

ὅταν λέγωσιν, εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐπίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you as a thief.

Vos autem, fratres, non estis in tenebris, ut vos die illa tamquam fur comprehendat:

ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτας καταλάβῃ,

For all you are the children of light and children of the day: we are not of the night nor of darkness.

omnes enim vos filii lucis estis, et filii diei : non sumus noctis, neque tenebrarum.

πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς υἱοὶ φωτός ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ἡμέρας. οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους:

Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do: but let us watch, and be sober.

Igitur non dormiamus sicut et ceteri, sed vigilemus, et sobrii simus.

ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς οἱ λοιποί, ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν.

For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunk, are drunk in the night.

Qui enim dormiunt, nocte dormiunt : et qui ebrii sunt, nocte ebrii sunt.

οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν, καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν:

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, having on the breast plate of faith and charity and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

Nos autem, qui diei sumus, sobrii simus, induti loricam fidei et caritatis, et galeam spem salutis:

ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν, ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας:

For God hath not appointed us unto wrath: but unto the purchasing of salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

quoniam non posuit nos Deus in iram, sed in acquisitionem salutis per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum,

ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ [Χριστοῦ],

Who died for us: that, whether we watch or sleep, we may live together with him.

qui mortuus est pro nobis : ut sive vigilemus, sive dormiamus, simul cum illo vivamus.

τοῦ ἀποθανόντος περὶ ἡμῶν ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν.

For which cause comfort one another and edify one another, as you also do.

Propter quod consolamini invicem, et ædificate alterutrum, sicut et facitis.

διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε.

And we beseech you, brethren, to know them who labour among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you;

Rogamus autem vos, fratres, ut noveritis eos qui laborant inter vos, et præsunt vobis in Domino, et monent vos,

Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς,

That you esteem them more abundantly in charity, for their work’s sake. Have peace with them.

ut habeatis illos abundantius in caritate propter opus illorum: pacem habete cum eis.

καὶ ἡγεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ διὰ τὸ ἔργον αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.

And we beseech you, brethren, rebuke the unquiet: comfort the feeble-minded: support the weak: be patient towards all men.

Rogamus autem vos, fratres, corripite inquietos, consolamini pusillanimes, suscipite infirmos, patientes estote ad omnes.

παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας.

See that none render evil for evil to any man: but ever follow that which is good towards each other and towards all men.

Videte ne quis malum pro malo alicui reddat : sed semper quod bonum est sectamini in invicem, et in omnes.

ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας.

Always rejoice.

Semper gaudete.

πάντοτε χαίρετε,

Pray without ceasing.

Sine intermissione orate.

ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε,

In all things give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all.

In omnibus gratias agite: hæc est enim voluntas Dei in Christo Jesu in omnibus vobis.

ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε: τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς.

Extinguish not the spirit.

Spiritum nolite extinguere.

τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε,

Despise not prophecies.

Prophetias nolite spernere.

προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε:

But prove all things: hold fast that which is good.

Omnia autem probate : quod bonum est tenete.

πάντα [δὲ] δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε,

From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves.

Ab omni specie mala abstinete vos.

ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε.

And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in all things: that your whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ipse autem Deus pacis sanctificet vos per omnia : ut integer spiritus vester, et anima, et corpus sine querela in adventu Domini nostri Jesu Christi servetur.

Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς, καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη.

He is faithful who hath called you, who also will do it.

Fidelis est, qui vocavit vos : qui etiam faciet.

πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς, ὃς καὶ ποιήσει.

Brethren, pray for us.

Fratres, orate pro nobis.

ἀδελφοί, προσεύχεσθε [καὶ] περὶ ἡμῶν.

Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss.

Salutate fratres omnes in osculo sancto.

ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ.

I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.

Adjuro vos per Dominum ut legatur epistola hæc omnibus sanctis fratribus.

ἐνορκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν κύριον ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi vobiscum. Amen.

Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μεθ' ὑμῶν.
