John 11

1Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and of Martha her sister.

2(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

3His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

4And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister Mary and Lazarus.

6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.

7Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.

8The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee. And goest thou thither again?

9Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:

10But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

11These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth: but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

12His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13But Jesus spoke of his death: and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.

14Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.

15And I am glad, for your sakes; that I was not there, that you may believe. But, let us go to him.

16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17Jesus therefore came: and found that he had been four days already in the grave.

18(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)

19And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus was come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.

21Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.

24Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.

25Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:

26And every one that liveth and believeth in me shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?

27She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ, the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.

28And when she had said these things, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come and calleth for thee.

29She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly and cometh to him.

30For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.

31The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.

32When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet and saith to him. Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her weeping, groaned in the spirit and troubled himself,

34And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.

35And Jesus wept.

36The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.

37But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind have caused that this man should not die?

38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.

39Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.

40Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?

41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes, said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.

42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.

44And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands. And his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him and let him go.

45Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.

46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things that Jesus had done.

47The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?

48If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.

49But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.

50Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people and that the whole nation perish not.

51And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.

52And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God that were dispersed.

53From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.

54Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews: but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem. And there he abode with his disciples.

55And the pasch of the Jews was at hand: and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch, to purify themselves.

56They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment that, if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.

3Miserunt ergo sorores ejus ad eum dicentes : Domine, ecce quem amas infirmatur.

4Audiens autem Jesus dixit eis : Infirmitas hæc non est ad mortem, sed pro gloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam.

5Diligebat autem Jesus Martham, et sororem ejus Mariam, et Lazarum.

6Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tunc quidem mansit in eodem loco duobus diebus;

7deinde post hæc dixit discipulis suis: Eamus in Judæam iterum.

8Dicunt ei discipuli : Rabbi, nunc quærebant te Judæi lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc?

9Respondit Jesus : Nonne duodecim sunt horæ diei? Si quis ambulaverit in die, non offendit, quia lucem hujus mundi videt:

10si autem ambulaverit in nocte, offendit, quia lux non est in eo.

11Hæc ait, et post hæc dixit eis : Lazarus amicus noster dormit : sed vado ut a somno excitem eum.

12Dixerunt ergo discipuli ejus : Domine, si dormit, salvus erit.

13Dixerat autem Jesus de morte ejus : illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somni diceret.

14Tunc ergo Jesus dixit eis manifeste : Lazarus mortuus est:

15et gaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi, sed eamus ad eum.

16Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos : Eamus et nos, ut moriamur cum eo.

17Venit itaque Jesus : et invenit eum quatuor dies jam in monumento habentem.

18(Erat autem Bethania juxta Jerosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.)

19Multi autem ex Judæis venerant ad Martham et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre suo.

20Martha ergo ut audivit quia Jesus venit, occurrit illi : Maria autem domi sedebat.

21Dixit ergo Martha ad Jesum : Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meus non fuisset mortuus:

22sed et nunc scio quia quæcumque poposceris a Deo, dabit tibi Deus.

23Dicit illi Jesus : Resurget frater tuus.

24Dicit ei Martha: Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die.

25Dixit ei Jesus : Ego sum resurrectio et vita : qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet:

26et omnis qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in æternum. Credis hoc?

27Ait illi : Utique Domine, ego credidi quia tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi, qui in hunc mundum venisti.

28Et cum hæc dixisset, abiit, et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio, dicens : Magister adest, et vocat te.

29Illa ut audivit, surgit cito, et venit ad eum;

30nondum enim venerat Jesus in castellum : sed erat adhuc in illo loco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.

31Judæi ergo, qui erant cum ea in domo, et consolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit, et exiit, secuti sunt eam dicentes : Quia vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi.

32Maria ergo, cum venisset ubi erat Jesus, videns eum, cecidit ad pedes ejus, et dicit ei : Domine, si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus.

33Jesus ergo, ut vidit eam plorantem, et Judæos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, infremuit spiritu, et turbavit seipsum,

34et dixit : Ubi posuistis eum? Dicunt ei : Domine, veni, et vide.

35Et lacrimatus est Jesus.

36Dixerunt ergo Judæi : Ecce quomodo amabat eum.

37Quidam autem ex ipsis dixerunt : Non poterat hic, qui aperuit oculos cæci nati, facere ut hic non moreretur?

38Jesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum. Erat autem spelunca, et lapis superpositus erat ei.

39Ait Jesus : Tollite lapidem. Dicit ei Martha, soror ejus qui mortuus fuerat : Domine, jam fœtet, quatriduanus est enim.

40Dicit ei Jesus : Nonne dixi tibi quoniam si credideris, videbis gloriam Dei?

41Tulerunt ergo lapidem : Jesus autem, elevatis sursum oculis, dixit : Pater, gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.

42Ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum qui circumstat, dixi : ut credant quia tu me misisti.

43Hæc cum dixisset, voce magna clamavit : Lazare, veni foras.

44Et statim prodiit qui fuerat mortuus, ligatus pedes, et manus institis, et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dixit eis Jesus : Solvite eum et sinite abire.

45Multi ergo ex Judæis, qui venerant ad Mariam, et Martham, et viderant quæ fecit Jesus, crediderunt in eum.

46Quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt ad pharisæos, et dixerunt eis quæ fecit Jesus.

47Collegerunt ergo pontifices et pharisæi concilium, et dicebant : Quid facimus, quia hic homo multa signa facit?

48Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et venient Romani, et tollent nostrum locum, et gentem.

49Unus autem ex ipsis, Caiphas nomine, cum esset pontifex anni illius, dixit eis : Vos nescitis quidquam,

50nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non tota gens pereat.

51Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit : sed cum esset pontifex anni illius, prophetavit, quod Jesus moriturus erat pro gente,

52et non tantum pro gente, sed ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.

53Ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt ut interficerent eum.

54Jesus ergo jam non in palam ambulabat apud Judæos, sed abiit in regionem juxta desertum, in civitatem quæ dicitur Ephrem, et ibi morabatur cum discipulis suis.

55Proximum autem erat Pascha Judæorum, et ascenderunt multi Jerosolymam de regione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent seipsos.

56Quærebant ergo Jesum, et colloquebantur ad invicem, in templo stantes : Quid putatis, quia non venit ad diem festum?

57Dederant autem pontifices et pharisæi mandatum ut si quis cognoverit ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendant eum.

1Ἦν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν, Λάζαρος ἀπὸ Βηθανίας, ἐκ τῆς κώμης Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς.

2ἦν δὲ Μαριὰμ ἡ ἀλείψασα τὸν κύριον μύρῳ καὶ ἐκμάξασα τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς, ἧς ὁ ἀδελφὸς Λάζαρος ἠσθένει.

3ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι: κύριε, ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ.

4ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: αὕτη ἡ ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ' ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ δι' αὐτῆς.

5ἠγάπα δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον.

6ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ, τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ᾧ ἦν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας:

7ἔπειτα μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς: ἄγωμεν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν πάλιν.

8λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί: ῥαββί, νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ;

9ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς: οὐχὶ δώδεκα ὧραί εἰσιν τῆς ἡμέρας; ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, οὐ προσκόπτει, ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει:

10ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί, προσκόπτει, ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ.

11ταῦτα εἶπεν, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς: Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται: ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν.

12εἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτῷ κύριε, εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται.

13εἰρήκει δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ. ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει.

14τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ: Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν,

15καὶ χαίρω δι' ὑμᾶς, ἵνα πιστεύσητε, ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ: ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν.

16εἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς: ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ' αὐτοῦ.

17Ἐλθὼν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εὗρεν αὐτὸν τέσσαρας ἤδη ἡμέρας ἔχοντα ἐν τῷ μνημείῳ.

18ἦν δὲ Βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε.

19πολλοὶ δὲ ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐληλύθεισαν πρὸς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ Μαριὰμ, ἵνα παραμυθήσωνται αὐτὰς περὶ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ.

20ἡ οὖν Μάρθα ὡς ἤκουσεν ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἔρχεται, ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ: Μαριὰμ δὲ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἐκαθέζετο.

21εἶπεν οὖν ἡ Μάρθα πρὸς Ἰησοῦν: κύριε, εἰ ἦς ὧδε, οὐκ ἂν ἀπέθανεν ὁ ἀδελφός μου:

22καὶ νῦν οἶδα ὅτι ὅσα ἂν αἰτήσῃ τὸν θεὸν, δώσει σοι ὁ θεός.

23λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἀναστήσεται ὁ ἀδελφός σου.

24λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ Μάρθα: οἶδα ὅτι ἀναστήσεται ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ.

25εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή: ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ κἂν ἀποθάνῃ ζήσεται,

26καὶ πᾶς ὁ ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα: πιστεύεις τοῦτο;

27λέγει αὐτῷ: ναί, κύριε: ἐγὼ πεπίστευκα ὅτι σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐρχόμενος.

28καὶ τοῦτο εἰποῦσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἐφώνησεν Μαριὰμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς λάθρᾳ εἰποῦσα: ὁ διδάσκαλος πάρεστιν καὶ φωνεῖ σε.

29ἐκείνη δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν, ἠγέρθη ταχὺ καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν:

30οὔπω δὲ ἐληλύθει ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν κώμην, ἀλλ' ἦν ἔτι ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἡ Μάρθα.

31οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι οἱ ὄντες μετ' αὐτῆς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ καὶ παραμυθούμενοι αὐτήν, ἰδόντες τὴν Μαριὰμ ὅτι ταχέως ἀνέστη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν, ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῇ, δόξαντες ὅτι ὑπάγει εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἵνα κλαύσῃ ἐκεῖ.

32ἡ οὖν Μαριὰμ ὡς ἦλθεν ὅπου ἦν Ἰησοῦς, ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἔπεσεν αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς πόδας, λέγουσα αὐτῷ: κύριε, εἰ ἦς ὧδε, οὐκ ἄν μου ἀπέθανεν ὁ ἀδελφός.

33Ἰησοῦς οὖν ὡς εἶδεν αὐτὴν κλαίουσαν καὶ τοὺς συνελθόντας αὐτῇ Ἰουδαίους κλαίοντας, ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτόν,

34καὶ εἶπεν: ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: κύριε, ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε.

35ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς.

36ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι: ἴδε πῶς ἐφίλει αὐτόν.

37τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπαν: οὐκ ἐδύνατο οὗτος ὁ ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὗτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ;

38Ἰησοῦς οὖν πάλιν ἐμβριμώμενος ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἔρχεται εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον: ἦν δὲ σπήλαιον, καὶ λίθος ἐπέκειτο ἐπ' αὐτῷ.

39λέγει ὁ Ἰησοῦς: ἄρατε τὸν λίθον. λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ ἀδελφὴ τοῦ τετελευτηκότος Μάρθα: κύριε, ἤδη ὄζει: τεταρταῖος γάρ ἐστιν.

40λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς: οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς ὄψῃ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ θεοῦ;

41ἦραν οὖν τὸν λίθον: ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἦρεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἄνω καὶ εἶπεν: πάτερ, εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι ἤκουσάς μου.

42ἐγὼ δὲ ᾔδειν ὅτι πάντοτέ μου ἀκούεις: ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον τὸν περιεστῶτα εἶπον, ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας.

43καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐκραύγασεν: Λάζαρε, δεῦρο ἔξω.

44ἐξῆλθεν ὁ τεθνηκὼς δεδεμένος τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας κειρίαις, καὶ ἡ ὄψις αὐτοῦ σουδαρίῳ περιεδέδετο. λέγει [ὁ] Ἰησοῦς αὐτοῖς: λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἄφετε αὐτὸν ὑπάγειν.

45Πολλοὶ οὖν ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, οἱ ἐλθόντες πρὸς τὴν Μαριὰμ καὶ θεασάμενοι ὃ ἐποίησεν, ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν:

46τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπῆλθον πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς ἃ ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς.

47Συνήγαγον οὖν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον, καὶ ἔλεγον: τί ποιοῦμεν, ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ποιεῖ σημεῖα;

48ἐὰν ἀφῶμεν αὐτὸν οὕτως, πάντες πιστεύσουσιν εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ ἐλεύσονται οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ ἀροῦσιν ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν τόπον καὶ τὸ ἔθνος.

49εἷς δέ τις ἐξ αὐτῶν Καϊάφας, ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε οὐδέν,

50οὐδὲ λογίζεσθε ὅτι συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα εἷς ἄνθρωπος ἀποθάνῃ ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ ἔθνος ἀπόληται.

51τοῦτο δὲ ἀφ' ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εἶπεν, ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου ἐπροφήτευσεν ὅτι ἔμελλεν Ἰησοῦς ἀποθνῄσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους,

52καὶ οὐχ ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους μόνον, ἀλλ' ἵνα καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ τὰ διεσκορπισμένα συναγάγῃ εἰς ἕν.

53ἀπ' ἐκείνης οὖν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐβουλεύσαντο ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτόν.

54ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι παρρησίᾳ περιεπάτει ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις, ἀλλὰ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν χώραν ἐγγὺς τῆς ἐρήμου, εἰς Ἐφραὶμ λεγομένην πόλιν, κἀκεῖ ἔμεινεν μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν.

55ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς τὸ πάσχα τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ ἀνέβησαν πολλοὶ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἐκ τῆς χώρας πρὸ τοῦ πάσχα, ἵνα ἁγνίσωσιν ἑαυτούς.

56ἐζήτουν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔλεγον μετ' ἀλλήλων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστηκότες: τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν, ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν;

57δεδώκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐντολὰς ἵνα ἐάν τις γνῷ ποῦ ἐστιν μηνύσῃ, ὅπως πιάσωσιν αὐτόν.
