Proverbs 15

1A mild answer breaketh wrath: but a harsh word stirreth up fury.

2The tongue of the wise adorneth knowledge: but the mouth of fools bubbleth out folly.

3The eyes of the Lord in every place behold the good and the evil.

4A peaceable tongue is a tree of life: but that which is immoderate, shall crush the spirit.

5A fool laugheth at the instruction of his father: but he that regardeth reproofs shall become prudent. In abundant justice there is the greatest strength: but the devices of the wicked shall be rooted out.

6The house of the just is very much strength: and in the fruits of the wicked is trouble.

7The lips of the wise shall disperse knowledge: the heart of fools shall be unlike.

8The victims of the wicked are abominable to the Lord: the vows of the just are acceptable.

9The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: he that followeth justice is beloved by him.

10Instruction is grievous to him that forsaketh the way of life: he that hateth reproof shall die.

11Hell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more the hearts of the children of men?

12A corrupt man loveth not one that reproveth him: nor will he go to the wise.

13A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by grief of mind the spirit is cast down.

14The heart of the wise seeketh instruction: and the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

15All the days of the poor are evil: a secure mind is like a continual feast.

16Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasures without content.

17It is better to be invited to herbs with love, than to a fatted calf with hatred.

18A passionate man stirreth up strifes: he that is patient appeaseth those that are stirred up.

19The way of the slothful is as a hedge of thorns: the way of the just is without offence.

20A wise son maketh a father joyful: but the foolish man despiseth his mother.

21Folly is joy to the fool: and the wise man maketh straight his steps.

22Designs are brought to nothing where there is no counsel: but where there are many counsellors, they are established.

23A man rejoiceth in the sentence of his mouth: and a word in due time is best.

24The path of life is above for the wise, that he may decline from the lowest hell.

25The Lord will destroy the house of the proud: and will strengthen the borders of the widow.

26Evil thoughts are an abomination to the Lord: and pure words most beautiful shall be confirmed by him.

27He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house: but he that hateth bribes shall live. By mercy and faith sins are purged away: and by the fear of the Lord every one declineth from evil.

28The mind of the just studieth obedience: the mouth of the wicked overfloweth with evils.

29The Lord is far from the wicked: and he will hear the prayers of the just.

30The light of the eyes rejoiceth the soul: a good name maketh the bones fat.

31The ear that heareth the reproofs of life, shall abide in the midst of the wise.

32He that rejecteth instruction, despiseth his own soul: but he that yieldeth to reproof, possesseth understanding.

33The fear of the Lord is the lesson of wisdom: and humility goeth before glory.

1Responsio mollis frangit iram; sermo durus suscitat furorem.

2Lingua sapientium ornat scientiam; os fatuorum ebullit stultitiam.

3In omni loco, oculi Domini contemplantur bonos et malos.

4Lingua placabilis lignum vitæ; quæ autem immoderata est conteret spiritum.

5Stultus irridet disciplinam patris sui; qui autem custodit increpationes astutior fiet. In abundanti justitia virtus maxima est : cogitationes autem impiorum eradicabuntur.

6Domus justi plurima fortitudo, et in fructibus impii conturbatio.

7Labia sapientium disseminabunt scientiam; cor stultorum dissimile erit.

8Victimæ impiorum abominabiles Domino; vota justorum placabilia.

9Abominatio est Domino via impii; qui sequitur justitiam diligitur ab eo.

10Doctrina mala deserenti viam vitæ; qui increpationes odit, morietur.

11Infernus et perditio coram Domino; quanto magis corda filiorum hominum!

12Non amat pestilens eum qui se corripit, nec ad sapientes graditur.

13Cor gaudens exhilarat faciem; in mœrore animi dejicitur spiritus.

14Cor sapientis quærit doctrinam, et os stultorum pascitur imperitia.

15Omnes dies pauperis, mali; secura mens quasi juge convivium.

16Melius est parum cum timore Domini, quam thesauri magni et insatiabiles.

17Melius est vocari ad olera cum caritate, quam ad vitulum saginatum cum odio.

18Vir iracundus provocat rixas; qui patiens est mitigat suscitatas.

19Iter pigrorum quasi sepes spinarum; via justorum absque offendiculo.

20Filius sapiens lætificat patrem, et stultus homo despicit matrem suam.

21Stultitia gaudium stulto, et vir prudens dirigit gressus suos.

22Dissipantur cogitationes ubi non est consilium; ubi vero sunt plures consiliarii, confirmantur.

23Lætatur homo in sententia oris sui, et sermo opportunus est optimus.

24Semita vitæ super eruditum, ut declinet de inferno novissimo.

25Domum superborum demolietur Dominus, et firmos faciet terminos viduæ.

26Abominatio Domini cogitationes malæ, et purus sermo pulcherrimus firmabitur ab eo.

27Conturbat domum suam qui sectatur avaritiam; qui autem odit munera, vivet. Per misericordiam et fidem purgantur peccata : per timorem autem Domini declinat omnis a malo.

28Mens justi meditatur obedientiam; os impiorum redundat malis.

29Longe est Dominus ab impiis, et orationes justorum exaudiet.

30Lux oculorum lætificat animam; fama bona impinguat ossa.

31Auris quæ audit increpationes vitæ in medio sapientium commorabitur.

32Qui abjicit disciplinam despicit animam suam; qui autem acquiescit increpationibus possessor est cordis.

33Timor Domini disciplina sapientiæ, et gloriam præcedit humilitas.

1ὀργὴ ἀπόλλυσιν καὶ φρονίμους ἀπόκρισις δὲ ὑποπίπτουσα ἀποστρέφει θυμόν λόγος δὲ λυπηρὸς ἐγείρει ὀργάς

2γλῶσσα σοφῶν καλὰ ἐπίσταται στόμα δὲ ἀφρόνων ἀναγγελεῖ κακά

3ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ ὀφθαλμοὶ κυρίου σκοπεύουσιν κακούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς

4ἴασις γλώσσης δένδρον ζωῆς ὁ δὲ συντηρῶν αὐτὴν πλησθήσεται πνεύματος

5ἄφρων μυκτηρίζει παιδείαν πατρός ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων ἐντολὰς πανουργότερος

6ἐν πλεοναζούσῃ δικαιοσύνῃ ἰσχὺς πολλή οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ὁλόρριζοι ἐκ γῆς ὀλοῦνται οἴκοις δικαίων ἰσχὺς πολλή καρποὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀπολοῦνται

7χείλη σοφῶν δέδεται αἰσθήσει καρδίαι δὲ ἀφρόνων οὐκ ἀσφαλεῖς

8θυσίαι ἀσεβῶν βδέλυγμα κυρίῳ εὐχαὶ δὲ κατευθυνόντων δεκταὶ παρ' αὐτῷ

9βδέλυγμα κυρίῳ ὁδοὶ ἀσεβοῦς διώκοντας δὲ δικαιοσύνην ἀγαπᾷ

10παιδεία ἀκάκου γνωρίζεται ὑπὸ τῶν παριόντων οἱ δὲ μισοῦντες ἐλέγχους τελευτῶσιν αἰσχρῶς

11ᾅδης καὶ ἀπώλεια φανερὰ παρὰ τῷ κυρίῳ πῶς οὐχὶ καὶ αἱ καρδίαι τῶν ἀνθρώπων

12οὐκ ἀγαπήσει ἀπαίδευτος τοὺς ἐλέγχοντας αὐτόν μετὰ δὲ σοφῶν οὐχ ὁμιλήσει

13καρδίας εὐφραινομένης πρόσωπον θάλλει ἐν δὲ λύπαις οὔσης σκυθρωπάζει

14καρδία ὀρθὴ ζητεῖ αἴσθησιν στόμα δὲ ἀπαιδεύτων γνώσεται κακά

15πάντα τὸν χρόνον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τῶν κακῶν προσδέχονται κακά οἱ δὲ ἀγαθοὶ ἡσυχάζουσιν διὰ παντός

16κρείσσων μικρὰ μερὶς μετὰ φόβου κυρίου ἢ θησαυροὶ μεγάλοι μετὰ ἀφοβίας

17κρείσσων ξενισμὸς λαχάνων πρὸς φιλίαν καὶ χάριν ἢ παράθεσις μόσχων μετὰ ἔχθρας

18ἀνὴρ θυμώδης παρασκευάζει μάχας μακρόθυμος δὲ καὶ τὴν μέλλουσαν καταπραΰνει μακρόθυμος ἀνὴρ κατασβέσει κρίσεις ὁ δὲ ἀσεβὴς ἐγείρει μᾶλλον

19ὁδοὶ ἀεργῶν ἐστρωμέναι ἀκάνθαις αἱ δὲ τῶν ἀνδρείων τετριμμέναι

20υἱὸς σοφὸς εὐφραίνει πατέρα υἱὸς δὲ ἄφρων μυκτηρίζει μητέρα αὐτοῦ

21ἀνοήτου τρίβοι ἐνδεεῖς φρενῶν ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος κατευθύνων πορεύεται

22ὑπερτίθενται λογισμοὺς οἱ μὴ τιμῶντες συνέδρια ἐν δὲ καρδίαις βουλευομένων μένει βουλή

23οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ ὁ κακὸς αὐτῇ οὐδὲ μὴ εἴπῃ καίριόν τι καὶ καλὸν τῷ κοινῷ

24ὁδοὶ ζωῆς διανοήματα συνετοῦ ἵνα ἐκκλίνας ἐκ τοῦ ᾅδου σωθῇ

25οἴκους ὑβριστῶν κατασπᾷ κύριος ἐστήρισεν δὲ ὅριον χήρας

26βδέλυγμα κυρίῳ λογισμὸς ἄδικος ἁγνῶν δὲ ῥήσεις σεμναί

27ἐξόλλυσιν ἑαυτὸν ὁ δωρολήμπτης ὁ δὲ μισῶν δώρων λήμψεις σῴζεται ἐλεημοσύναις καὶ πίστεσιν ἀποκαθαίρονται ἁμαρτίαι τῷ δὲ φόβῳ κυρίου ἐκκλίνει πᾶς ἀπὸ κακοῦ

28καρδίαι δικαίων μελετῶσιν πίστεις στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀποκρίνεται κακά δεκταὶ παρὰ κυρίῳ ὁδοὶ ἀνθρώπων δικαίων διὰ δὲ αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐχθροὶ φίλοι γίνονται

29μακρὰν ἀπέχει ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ ἀσεβῶν εὐχαῖς δὲ δικαίων ἐπακούει κρείσσων ὀλίγη λῆμψις μετὰ δικαιοσύνης ἢ πολλὰ γενήματα μετὰ ἀδικίας καρδία ἀνδρὸς λογιζέσθω δίκαια ἵνα ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ διορθωθῇ τὰ διαβήματα αὐτοῦ

30θεωρῶν ὀφθαλμὸς καλὰ εὐφραίνει καρδίαν φήμη δὲ ἀγαθὴ πιαίνει ὀστᾶ

32ὃς ἀπωθεῖται παιδείαν μισεῖ ἑαυτόν ὁ δὲ τηρῶν ἐλέγχους ἀγαπᾷ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ

33φόβος θεοῦ παιδεία καὶ σοφία καὶ ἀρχὴ δόξης ἀποκριθήσεται αὐτῇ
