Genesis 38

At that time Juda went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Odollamite, named Hiras.

Eodem tempore, descendens Judas a fratribus suis, divertit ad virum Odollamitem, nomine Hiram.

ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ κατέβη Ιουδας ἀπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀφίκετο ἕως πρὸς ἄνθρωπόν τινα Οδολλαμίτην ᾧ ὄνομα Ιρας

And he saw there the daughter of a man of Chanaan, called Sue: and taking her to wife, he went in unto her.

Viditque ibi filiam hominis Chananæi, vocabulo Sue : et accepta uxore, ingressus est ad eam.

καὶ εἶδεν ἐκεῖ Ιουδας θυγατέρα ἀνθρώπου Χαναναίου ᾗ ὄνομα Σαυα καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτὴν καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτήν

And she conceived, and bore a son, and called his name Her.

Quæ concepit, et peperit filium, et vocavit nomen ejus Her.

καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ηρ

And conceiving again, she bore a son, and called him Onan.

Rursumque concepto fœtu, natum filium vocavit Onan.

καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτι ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Αυναν

She bore also a third: whom she called Sela. After whose birth, she ceased to bear any more.

Tertium quoque peperit : quem appellavit Sela; quo nato, parere ultra cessavit.

καὶ προσθεῖσα ἔτι ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Σηλωμ αὐτὴ δὲ ἦν ἐν Χασβι ἡνίκα ἔτεκεν αὐτούς

And Juda took a wife for Her, his first born, whose name was Thamar.

Dedit autem Judas uxorem primogenito suo Her, nomine Thamar.

καὶ ἔλαβεν Ιουδας γυναῖκα Ηρ τῷ πρωτοτόκῳ αὐτοῦ ᾗ ὄνομα Θαμαρ

And Her, the first born of Juda, was wicked in the sight of the Lord: and was slain by him.

Fuit quoque Her primogenitus Judæ nequam in conspectu Domini: et ab eo occisus est.

ἐγένετο δὲ Ηρ πρωτότοκος Ιουδα πονηρὸς ἐναντίον κυρίου καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός

Juda, therefore, said to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother’s wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother.

Dixit ergo Judas ad Onan filium suum : Ingredere uxorem fratris tui, et sociare illi, ut suscites semen fratri tuo.

εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας τῷ Αυναν εἴσελθε πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου καὶ γάμβρευσαι αὐτὴν καὶ ἀνάστησον σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου

He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother’s name.

Ille sciens non sibi nasci filios, introiens ad uxorem fratris sui, semen fundebat in terram, ne liberi fratris nomine nascerentur.

γνοὺς δὲ Αυναν ὅτι οὐκ αὐτῷ ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα ἐγίνετο ὅταν εἰσήρχετο πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ ἐξέχεεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν τοῦ μὴ δοῦναι σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ

And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing:

Et idcirco percussit eum Dominus, quod rem detestabilem faceret.

πονηρὸν δὲ ἐφάνη ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ ὅτι ἐποίησεν τοῦτο καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν καὶ τοῦτον

Wherefore Juda said to Thamar his daughter-in-law: Remain a widow in thy father’s house, till Sela my son grow up: for he was afraid lest he also might die, as his brethren did. She went her way, and dwelt in her father’s house.

Quam ob rem dixit Judas Thamar nurui suæ : Esto vidua in domo patris tui, donec crescat Sela filius meus : timebat enim ne et ipse moreretur, sicut fratres ejus. Quæ abiit, et habitavit in domo patris sui.

εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Θαμαρ τῇ νύμφῃ αὐτοῦ κάθου χήρα ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός σου ἕως μέγας γένηται Σηλωμ ὁ υἱός μου εἶπεν γάρ μήποτε ἀποθάνῃ καὶ οὗτος ὥσπερ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπελθοῦσα δὲ Θαμαρ ἐκάθητο ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς

And after many days were past: the daughter of Sue the wife of Juda died: and when he had taken comfort after his mourning, he went up to Thamnas, to the shearers of his sheep, he and Hiras the Odollamite, the shepherd of his flock.

Evolutis autem multis diebus, mortua est filia Sue uxor Judæ : qui, post luctum consolatione suscepta, ascendebat ad tonsores ovium suarum, ipse et Hiras opilio gregis Odollamites, in Thamnas.

ἐπληθύνθησαν δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαυα ἡ γυνὴ Ιουδα καὶ παρακληθεὶς Ιουδας ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τοὺς κείροντας τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ αὐτὸς καὶ Ιρας ὁ ποιμὴν αὐτοῦ ὁ Οδολλαμίτης εἰς Θαμνα

And it was told Thamar that her father-in-law was come up to Thamnas to shear his sheep.

Nuntiatumque est Thamar quod socer illius ascenderet in Thamnas ad tondendas oves.

καὶ ἀπηγγέλη Θαμαρ τῇ νύμφῃ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες ἰδοὺ ὁ πενθερός σου ἀναβαίνει εἰς Θαμνα κεῖραι τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ

And she put off the garments of her widowhood, and took a veil: and changing her dress, sat in the cross way, that leadeth to Thamnas: because Sela was grown up, and she had not been married to him.

Quæ, depositis viduitatis vestibus, assumpsit theristrum : et mutato habitu, sedit in bivio itineris, quod ducit Thamnam : eo quod crevisset Sela, et non eum accepisset maritum.

καὶ περιελομένη τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως ἀφ' ἑαυτῆς περιεβάλετο θέριστρον καὶ ἐκαλλωπίσατο καὶ ἐκάθισεν πρὸς ταῖς πύλαις Αιναν ἥ ἐστιν ἐν παρόδῳ Θαμνα εἶδεν γὰρ ὅτι μέγας γέγονεν Σηλωμ αὐτὸς δὲ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα

When Juda saw her, he thought she was a harlot: for she had covered her face, lest she should be known.

Quam cum vidisset Judas, suspicatus est esse meretricem : operuerat enim vultum suum, ne agnosceretur.

καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν Ιουδας ἔδοξεν αὐτὴν πόρνην εἶναι κατεκαλύψατο γὰρ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω αὐτήν

And going to her, he said: Suffer me to lie with thee: for he knew her not to be his daughter-in-law. And she answered: What wilt thou give me to enjoy my company?

Ingrediensque ad eam, ait : Dimitte me ut coëam tecum : nesciebat enim quod nurus sua esset. Qua respondente : Quid dabis mihi ut fruaris concubitu meo?

ἐξέκλινεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν τὴν ὁδὸν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ἔασόν με εἰσελθεῖν πρὸς σέ οὐ γὰρ ἔγνω ὅτι ἡ νύμφη αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ δὲ εἶπεν τί μοι δώσεις ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃς πρός με

He said: I will send thee a kid out of the flock. And when she said again: I will suffer what thou wilt, if thou give me a pledge, till thou send what thou promisest.

dixit : Mittam tibi hædum de gregibus. Rursumque illa dicente : Patiar quod vis, si dederis mihi arrhabonem, donec mittas quod polliceris.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ἐγώ σοι ἀποστελῶ ἔριφον αἰγῶν ἐκ τῶν προβάτων ἡ δὲ εἶπεν ἐὰν δῷς ἀρραβῶνα ἕως τοῦ ἀποστεῖλαί σε

Juda said: What wilt thou have for a pledge? She answered: Thy ring and bracelet, and the staff which thou holdest in thy hand. The woman therefore at one copulation conceived.

Ait Judas : Quid tibi vis pro arrhabone dari? Respondit : Annulum tuum, et armillam, et baculum quem manu tenes. Ad unum igitur coitum mulier concepit,

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν τίνα τὸν ἀρραβῶνά σοι δώσω ἡ δὲ εἶπεν τὸν δακτύλιόν σου καὶ τὸν ὁρμίσκον καὶ τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν ἐν τῇ χειρί σου καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῇ καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτήν καὶ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔλαβεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ

And she arose and went her way: and putting off the apparel which she had taken, put on the garments of her widowhood.

et surgens abiit : depositoque habitu quem sumpserat, induta est viduitatis vestibus.

καὶ ἀναστᾶσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ περιείλατο τὸ θέριστρον ἀφ' ἑαυτῆς καὶ ἐνεδύσατο τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως αὐτῆς

And Juda sent a kid by his shepherd, the Odollamite, that he might receive the pledge again, which he had given to the woman: but he, not finding her,

Misit autem Judas hædum per pastorem suum Odollamitem, ut reciperet pignus quod dederat mulieri : qui cum non invenisset eam,

ἀπέστειλεν δὲ Ιουδας τὸν ἔριφον ἐξ αἰγῶν ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ ποιμένος αὐτοῦ τοῦ Οδολλαμίτου κομίσασθαι τὸν ἀρραβῶνα παρὰ τῆς γυναικός καὶ οὐχ εὗρεν αὐτήν

Asked the men of that place: Where is the woman that sat in the cross way? And when they all made answer: There was no harlot in this place,

interrogavit homines loci illius : Ubi est mulier quæ sedebat in bivio? Respondentibus cunctis : Non fuit in loco ista meretrix.

ἐπηρώτησεν δὲ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἐκ τοῦ τόπου ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ πόρνη ἡ γενομένη ἐν Αιναν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ καὶ εἶπαν οὐκ ἦν ἐνταῦθα πόρνη

He returned to Juda, and said to him: I have not found her; moreover, the men of that place said to me, that there never sat a harlot there.

Reversus est ad Judam, et dixit ei : Non inveni eam : sed et homines loci illius dixerunt mihi, numquam sedisse ibi scortum.

καὶ ἀπεστράφη πρὸς Ιουδαν καὶ εἶπεν οὐχ εὗρον καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου λέγουσιν μὴ εἶναι ὧδε πόρνην

Juda said: Let her take it to herself, surely she cannot charge us with a lie, I sent the kid which I promised: and thou didst not find her.

Ait Judas : Habeat sibi, certe mendacii arguere nos non potest, ego misi hædum quem promiseram : et tu non invenisti eam.

εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας ἐχέτω αὐτά ἀλλὰ μήποτε καταγελασθῶμεν ἐγὼ μὲν ἀπέσταλκα τὸν ἔριφον τοῦτον σὺ δὲ οὐχ εὕρηκας

And behold, after three months, they told Juda, saying: Thamar, thy daughter-in-law, hath played the harlot, and she appeareth to have a big belly. And Juda said: Bring her out that she may be burnt.

Ecce autem post tres menses nuntiaverunt Judæ, dicentes : Fornicata est Thamar nurus tua, et videtur uterus illius intumescere. Dixitque Judas : Producite eam ut comburatur.

ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τρίμηνον ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Ιουδα λέγοντες ἐκπεπόρνευκεν Θαμαρ ἡ νύμφη σου καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχει ἐκ πορνείας εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας ἐξαγάγετε αὐτήν καὶ κατακαυθήτω

But when she was led to execution, she sent to her father in law, saying: By the man, to whom these things belong, I am with child. See whose ring, and bracelet, and staff this is.

Quæ cum duceretur ad pœnam, misit ad socerum suum, dicens : De viro, cujus hæc sunt, concepi : cognosce cujus sit annulus, et armilla, et baculus.

αὐτὴ δὲ ἀγομένη ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τὸν πενθερὸν αὐτῆς λέγουσα ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τίνος ταῦτά ἐστιν ἐγὼ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχω καὶ εἶπεν ἐπίγνωθι τίνος ὁ δακτύλιος καὶ ὁ ὁρμίσκος καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος αὕτη

But he acknowledging the gifts, said: She is juster than I: because I did not give her to Sela, my son. However he knew her no more.

Qui, agnitis muneribus, ait : Justior me est : quia non tradidi eam Sela filio meo. Attamen ultra non cognovit eam.

ἐπέγνω δὲ Ιουδας καὶ εἶπεν δεδικαίωται Θαμαρ ἢ ἐγώ οὗ εἵνεκεν οὐκ ἔδωκα αὐτὴν Σηλωμ τῷ υἱῷ μου καὶ οὐ προσέθετο ἔτι τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτήν

And when she was ready to be brought to bed, there appeared twins in her womb: and in the very delivery of the infants, one put forth a hand, whereon the midwife tied a scarlet thread, saying:

Instante autem partu, apparuerunt gemini in utero : atque in ipsa effusione infantium unus protulit manum, in qua obstetrix ligavit coccinum, dicens:

ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἔτικτεν καὶ τῇδε ἦν δίδυμα ἐν τῇ γαστρὶ αὐτῆς

This shall come forth the first.

Iste egredietur prior.

ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τίκτειν αὐτὴν ὁ εἷς προεξήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα λαβοῦσα δὲ ἡ μαῖα ἔδησεν ἐπὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ κόκκινον λέγουσα οὗτος ἐξελεύσεται πρότερος

But he drawing back his hand, the other came forth: and the woman said: Why is the partition divided for thee? and therefore called his name Phares.

Illo vero retrahente manum, egressus est alter : dixitque mulier : Quare divisa est propter te maceria? et ob hanc causam, vocavit nomen ejus Phares.

ὡς δὲ ἐπισυνήγαγεν τὴν χεῖρα καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ἡ δὲ εἶπεν τί διεκόπη διὰ σὲ φραγμός καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Φαρες

Afterwards his brother came out, on whose hand was the scarlet thread: and she called his name Zara.

Postea egressus est frater ejus, in cujus manu erat coccinum : quem appellavit Zara.

καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ἐφ' ᾧ ἦν ἐπὶ τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ κόκκινον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ζαρα
