Genesis 35

1In the mean time God said to Jacob: Arise and go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to thee when thou didst flee from Esau, thy brother.

2And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed, and change your garments.

3Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, that we may make there an altar to God; who heard me in the day of my affliction, and accompanied me in my journey.

4So they gave him all the strange gods they had, and the earrings which were in their ears: and he buried them under the turpentine tree, that is behind the city of Sichem.

5And when they were departed, the terror of God fell upon all the cities round about, and they durst not pursue after them as they went away.

6And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, surnamed Bethel: he and all the people that were with him.

7And he built there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.

8At the same time Debora, the nurse of Rebecca, died, and was buried at the foot of Bethel, under an oak, and the name of that place was called, The oak of weeping.

9And God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,

10Saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called him Israel.

11And said to him: I am God almighty, increase thou and be multiplied. Nations and peoples of nations shall be from thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.

12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee.

13And he departed from him.

14But he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him: pouring drink offerings upon it, and pouring oil thereon:

15And calling the name of that place Bethel.

16And going forth from thence, he came in the spring time to the land which leadeth to Ephrata: wherein when Rachel was in travail,

17By reason of her hard labour, she began to be in danger, and the midwife said to her: Fear not, for thou shalt have this son also.

18And when her soul was departing for pain, and death was now at hand, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, the son of my pain: but his father called him Benjamin, that is, the son of the right hand.

19So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, this is Bethlehem.

20And Jacob erected a pillar over her sepulchre: this is the pillar of Rachel’s monument, to this day.

21Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flock tower.

22And when he dwelt in that country, Ruben went, and slept with Bala the concubine of his father: which he was not ignorant of. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

23The sons of Lia: Ruben the first born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Juda, and Issachar, and Zabulon.

24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

25The sons of Bala, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Nephthali.

26The sons of Zelpha, Lia's handmaid: Gad and Aser: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.

27And he came to Isaac his father in Mambre, the city of Arbee, this is Hebron: wherein Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

28And the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years.

29And being spent with age he died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

1Interea locutus est Deus ad Jacob : Surge, et ascende Bethel, et habita ibi, facque altare Deo qui apparuit tibi quando fugiebas Esau fratrem tuum.

2Jacob vero convocata omni domo sua, ait : Abjicite deos alienos qui in medio vestri sunt, et mundamini, ac mutate vestimenta vestra.

3Surgite, et ascendamus in Bethel, ut faciamus ibi altare Deo : qui exaudivit me in die tribulationis meæ, et socius fuit itineris mei.

4Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos quos habebant, et inaures quæ erant in auribus eorum : at ille infodit ea subter terebinthum, quæ est post urbem Sichem.

5Cumque profecti essent, terror Dei invasit omnes per circuitum civitates, et non sunt ausi persequi recedentes.

6Venit igitur Jacob Luzam, quæ est in terra Chanaan, cognomento Bethel : ipse et omnis populus cum eo.

7Ædificavitque ibi altare, et appellavit nomen loci illius, Domus Dei : ibi enim apparuit ei Deus cum fugeret fratrem suum.

8Eodem tempore mortua est Debora nutrix Rebeccæ, et sepulta est ad radices Bethel subter quercum : vocatumque est nomen loci illius, Quercus fletus.

9Apparuit autem iterum Deus Jacob postquam reversus est de Mesopotamia Syriæ, benedixitque ei

10dicens : Non vocaberis ultra Jacob, sed Israël erit nomen tuum. Et appellavit eum Israël,

11dixitque ei : Ego Deus omnipotens : cresce, et multiplicare : gentes et populi nationum ex te erunt, reges de lumbis tuis egredientur,

12terramque quam dedi Abraham et Isaac, dabo tibi et semini tuo post te.

13Et recessit ab eo.

14Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco quo locutus fuerat ei Deus : libans super eum libamina, et effundens oleum:

15vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel.

16Egressus autem inde, venit verno tempore ad terram quæ ducit Ephratam : in qua cum parturiret Rachel,

17ob difficultatem partus periclitari cœpit. Dixitque ei obstetrix : Noli timere, quia et hunc habebis filium.

18Egrediente autem anima præ dolore, et imminente jam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benomi, id est, Filius doloris mei : pater vero appellavit eum Benjamin, id est, Filius dextræ.

19Mortua est ergo Rachel, et sepulta est in via quæ ducit Ephratam, hæc est Bethlehem.

20Erexitque Jacob titulum super sepulchrum ejus : hic est titulus monumenti Rachel, usque in præsentem diem.

21Egressus inde, fixit tabernaculum trans Turrem gregis.

22Cumque habitaret in illa regione, abiit Ruben, et dormivit cum Bala concubina patris sui : quod illum minime latuit. Erant autem filii Jacob duodecim.

23Filii Liæ : primogenitus Ruben, et Simeon, et Levi, et Judas, et Issachar, et Zabulon.

24Filii Rachel : Joseph et Benjamin.

25Filii Balæ ancillæ Rachelis: Dan et Nephthali.

26Filii Zelphæ ancillæ Liæ : Gad et Aser : hi sunt filii Jacob, qui nati sunt ei in Mesopotamia Syriæ.

27Venit etiam ad Isaac patrem suum in Mambre, civitatem Arbee, hæc est Hebron, in qua peregrinatus est Abraham et Isaac.

28Et completi sunt dies Isaac centum octoginta annorum.

29Consumptusque ætate mortuus est : et appositus est populo suo senex et plenus dierum : et sepelierunt eum Esau et Jacob filii sui.

1εἶπεν δὲ ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Ιακωβ ἀναστὰς ἀνάβηθι εἰς τὸν τόπον Βαιθηλ καὶ οἴκει ἐκεῖ καὶ ποίησον ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον τῷ θεῷ τῷ ὀφθέντι σοι ἐν τῷ ἀποδιδράσκειν σε ἀπὸ προσώπου Ησαυ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου

2εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς μετ' αὐτοῦ ἄρατε τοὺς θεοὺς τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους τοὺς μεθ' ὑμῶν ἐκ μέσου ὑμῶν καὶ καθαρίσασθε καὶ ἀλλάξατε τὰς στολὰς ὑμῶν

3καὶ ἀναστάντες ἀναβῶμεν εἰς Βαιθηλ καὶ ποιήσωμεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον τῷ θεῷ τῷ ἐπακούσαντί μοι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως ὃς ἦν μετ' ἐμοῦ καὶ διέσωσέν με ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ᾗ ἐπορεύθην

4καὶ ἔδωκαν τῷ Ιακωβ τοὺς θεοὺς τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους οἳ ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ ἐνώτια τὰ ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ κατέκρυψεν αὐτὰ Ιακωβ ὑπὸ τὴν τερέμινθον τὴν ἐν Σικιμοις καὶ ἀπώλεσεν αὐτὰ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας

5καὶ ἐξῆρεν Ισραηλ ἐκ Σικιμων καὶ ἐγένετο φόβος θεοῦ ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις τὰς κύκλῳ αὐτῶν καὶ οὐ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ

6ἦλθεν δὲ Ιακωβ εἰς Λουζα ἥ ἐστιν ἐν γῇ Χανααν ἥ ἐστιν Βαιθηλ αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαός ὃς ἦν μετ' αὐτοῦ

7καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου Βαιθηλ ἐκεῖ γὰρ ἐπεφάνη αὐτῷ ὁ θεὸς ἐν τῷ ἀποδιδράσκειν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ προσώπου Ησαυ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ

8ἀπέθανεν δὲ Δεββωρα ἡ τροφὸς Ρεβεκκας κατώτερον Βαιθηλ ὑπὸ τὴν βάλανον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ιακωβ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Βάλανος πένθους

9ὤφθη δὲ ὁ θεὸς Ιακωβ ἔτι ἐν Λουζα ὅτε παρεγένετο ἐκ Μεσοποταμίας τῆς Συρίας καὶ ηὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός

10καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεός τὸ ὄνομά σου Ιακωβ οὐ κληθήσεται ἔτι Ιακωβ ἀλλ' Ισραηλ ἔσται τὸ ὄνομά σου

11εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ θεός ἐγὼ ὁ θεός σου αὐξάνου καὶ πληθύνου ἔθνη καὶ συναγωγαὶ ἐθνῶν ἔσονται ἐκ σοῦ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἐκ τῆς ὀσφύος σου ἐξελεύσονται

12καὶ τὴν γῆν ἣν δέδωκα Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ σοὶ δέδωκα αὐτήν σοὶ ἔσται καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου μετὰ σὲ δώσω τὴν γῆν ταύτην

13ἀνέβη δὲ ὁ θεὸς ἀπ' αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου οὗ ἐλάλησεν μετ' αὐτοῦ

14καὶ ἔστησεν Ιακωβ στήλην ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ᾧ ἐλάλησεν μετ' αὐτοῦ στήλην λιθίνην καὶ ἔσπεισεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν σπονδὴν καὶ ἐπέχεεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν ἔλαιον

15καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ιακωβ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐν ᾧ ἐλάλησεν μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖ ὁ θεός Βαιθηλ

16ἀπάρας δὲ Ιακωβ ἐκ Βαιθηλ ἔπηξεν τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπέκεινα τοῦ πύργου Γαδερ ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἤγγισεν Χαβραθα εἰς γῆν ἐλθεῖν Εφραθα ἔτεκεν Ραχηλ καὶ ἐδυστόκησεν ἐν τῷ τοκετῷ

17ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ σκληρῶς αὐτὴν τίκτειν εἶπεν αὐτῇ ἡ μαῖα θάρσει καὶ γὰρ οὗτός σοί ἐστιν υἱός

18ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ ἀφιέναι αὐτὴν τὴν ψυχήν ἀπέθνῃσκεν γάρ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Υἱὸς ὀδύνης μου ὁ δὲ πατὴρ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸν Βενιαμιν

19ἀπέθανεν δὲ Ραχηλ καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ Εφραθα αὕτη ἐστὶν Βηθλεεμ

20καὶ ἔστησεν Ιακωβ στήλην ἐπὶ τοῦ μνημείου αὐτῆς αὕτη ἐστὶν στήλη μνημείου Ραχηλ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας

22ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα κατῴκησεν Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ ἐπορεύθη Ρουβην καὶ ἐκοιμήθη μετὰ Βαλλας τῆς παλλακῆς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤκουσεν Ισραηλ καὶ πονηρὸν ἐφάνη ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ἦσαν δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ Ιακωβ δώδεκα

23υἱοὶ Λειας πρωτότοκος Ιακωβ Ρουβην Συμεων Λευι Ιουδας Ισσαχαρ Ζαβουλων

24υἱοὶ δὲ Ραχηλ Ιωσηφ καὶ Βενιαμιν

25υἱοὶ δὲ Βαλλας παιδίσκης Ραχηλ Δαν καὶ Νεφθαλι

26υἱοὶ δὲ Ζελφας παιδίσκης Λειας Γαδ καὶ Ασηρ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Ιακωβ οἳ ἐγένοντο αὐτῷ ἐν Μεσοποταμίᾳ τῆς Συρίας

27ἦλθεν δὲ Ιακωβ πρὸς Ισαακ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ εἰς Μαμβρη εἰς πόλιν τοῦ πεδίου αὕτη ἐστὶν Χεβρων ἐν γῇ Χανααν οὗ παρῴκησεν Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ

28ἐγένοντο δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι Ισαακ ἃς ἔζησεν ἔτη ἑκατὸν ὀγδοήκοντα

29καὶ ἐκλιπὼν ἀπέθανεν καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τὸ γένος αὐτοῦ πρεσβύτερος καὶ πλήρης ἡμερῶν καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν Ησαυ καὶ Ιακωβ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ
