Discover the Church Founded by Christ
Welcome
If you already believe in Jesus Christ and are wondering why there are so many Christian denominations, this page will help you understand what Catholics believe and why Catholics believe the Catholic Church preserves the faith, sacraments, and apostolic mission entrusted by Christ to His Church.
“Thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” — Matthew 16:18
What Is the Catholic Church?
The Catholic Church is the worldwide community of Christians founded by Jesus Christ and entrusted to the Apostles.
Catholics believe that Christ continues His mission through the Church by proclaiming the Gospel, teaching the truth, administering the sacraments, and leading souls to salvation.
The Church is not merely a human organization. Scripture calls the Church the Body of Christ.
“Now you are the body of Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 12:27
Why Catholic?
Catholics believe that Jesus founded one Church, gave authority to the Apostles, and promised to remain with His Church until the end of time.
- Jesus founded one visible Church.
- The Apostles led that Church after Christ’s Ascension.
- Bishops are successors of the Apostles.
- The Pope is the successor of Saint Peter.
- The Church preserves the Gospel, sacraments, and apostolic faith.
“And behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.” — Matthew 28:20

What Do Catholics Believe?
Catholic teaching is centered on Jesus Christ and the faith handed down by the Apostles.
- The Holy Trinity — One God in three Divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
- The Incarnation — Jesus Christ is true God and true Man.
- Salvation — Christ saves us through His grace, received by faith and lived in love.
- Sacred Scripture — The Bible is the inspired Word of God.
- Sacred Tradition — The faith handed down from the Apostles.
- The Sacraments — Visible signs instituted by Christ that truly give grace.
- The Communion of Saints — The family of God in Heaven, on earth, and being purified.
- The Resurrection — Eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Why Do Catholics Have Sacraments?
Catholics believe that Jesus gave His Church sacraments as visible signs that truly communicate His grace.
Through the sacraments, Christ continues to forgive, heal, strengthen, nourish, and sanctify His people.
- Baptism gives new life in Christ.
- Confirmation strengthens us with the Holy Ghost.
- The Eucharist gives us Christ Himself.
- Confession restores us when we fall into sin.
The sacraments are not merely symbols. They are encounters with the living Christ.
Why Do Catholics Have a Pope?
Catholics believe that Jesus gave Saint Peter a unique role of leadership among the Apostles.
After Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus said:
“And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 16:19
The Pope, the Bishop of Rome, is the successor of Saint Peter. His mission is to serve the unity of the Church and help preserve the faith handed down from the Apostles.
Why Do Catholics Honor Mary and the Saints?
Catholics worship God alone.
Catholics honor Mary because she is the Mother of Jesus Christ and the faithful woman who said yes to God’s plan of salvation.
Catholics also honor the saints as members of Christ’s Body who followed Him faithfully and now live with Him.
Asking Mary or the saints to pray for us is not worship. It is like asking a fellow Christian to pray for you, because all who belong to Christ are united in Him.
“My soul doth magnify the Lord.” — Luke 1:46
Why Do Catholics Trust the Church?
Catholics trust the Church because Christ entrusted His teaching and authority to the Apostles and promised that the Holy Ghost would guide His followers into truth.
Catholics read the Bible within the life of the Church and alongside Sacred Tradition, the living faith handed down from the Apostles.
This helps preserve the Gospel from being reduced to personal opinion or changed by each generation.
“He that heareth you, heareth me.” — Luke 10:16

How Can I Become Catholic?
Most adults enter the Catholic Church through OCIA — the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, formerly known as RCIA.
OCIA is a time of learning, prayer, discernment, and preparation for full communion with the Catholic Church.
Participating in OCIA does not obligate you to become Catholic. It is an opportunity to ask questions and explore the faith.
What Does This Mean for Me?
If you are exploring Catholicism, you do not need to have every question answered immediately. Faith often grows step by step as we seek Christ with sincerity.
The Catholic Church invites you to encounter Jesus Christ more deeply through His Word, His sacraments, His Church, and a life of prayer.
Becoming Catholic is not merely joining an institution. It is entering more fully into the life Christ gave to His Church and learning to follow Him as His disciple.
If you feel drawn toward the Catholic faith, that may be God’s grace already working in your heart. Continue asking questions, pray honestly, visit a parish, and consider learning more through OCIA.
“Seek, and you shall find.” — Matthew 7:7
