Virtue Formation

Learning to choose the good and become more like Jesus Christ.

What Is Virtue?

Virtue is a firm habit of doing the good. It strengthens the soul, orders our desires, and helps us choose what is pleasing to God.

The Christian life is not only about avoiding sin. It is about becoming holy. By grace, discipline, and repeated good actions, the soul is formed more and more into the likeness of Christ.

Sacred Scripture teaches, “Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 13:14

Why Virtue Formation Matters

Sin weakens the soul, but virtue strengthens it. A person who grows in virtue becomes more free to love God, resist temptation, serve others, and live with peace and integrity.

Virtue is formed over time. It grows through God’s grace, prayer, self-denial, repentance, and daily choices made in faithfulness to Christ.

The Cardinal Virtues

The cardinal virtues are key moral virtues that help order human life toward the good.

  • Prudence: helps us discern the true good and choose the right means.
  • Justice: helps us give God and neighbor what is due.
  • Fortitude: strengthens us to remain faithful during fear, suffering, and difficulty.
  • Temperance: orders our desires and passions according to reason and grace.

The Theological Virtues

The theological virtues are given by God and direct us toward Him.

  • Faith: by which we believe what God has revealed.
  • Hope: by which we trust in God’s promises and grace.
  • Charity: by which we love God above all things and our neighbor for His sake.

Charity is the greatest of the virtues because it unites the soul to God in love.
