Pentecost

The Coming of the Holy Spirit and the Birth of the Church

What Is Pentecost?

Pentecost is the great feast that concludes the Easter Season. Celebrated fifty days after Easter, it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Pentecost marks the public beginning of the Church’s mission to preach the Gospel to all nations.

The Descent of the Holy Spirit

As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples were gathered together when a mighty wind filled the house and tongues of fire appeared above them.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, they received courage, wisdom, and power to proclaim Jesus Christ to the world.

Why Pentecost Matters

  • The Holy Spirit descended upon the Church.
  • The Apostles were empowered for their mission.
  • The Church began her public ministry.
  • The Gospel was proclaimed to all peoples.
  • The faithful received the promise of Christ fulfilled.

Living Pentecost Today

Pentecost is not merely a past event. The Holy Spirit continues to guide, sanctify, and strengthen the Church today.

Catholics can live Pentecost through prayer, the sacraments, openness to grace, and courageous witness to Jesus Christ.
