Lent

Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving, and Conversion of Heart

What Is Lent?

Lent is the penitential season in which the Church prepares for Easter through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, repentance, and deeper conversion.

During Lent, Catholics are called to turn away from sin, return to God, and follow Christ more faithfully.

A Season of Conversion

Lent reminds us that the Christian life requires repentance. It is a time to examine the heart, confess sin, grow in discipline, and draw nearer to the mercy of God.

The ashes of Ash Wednesday remind us of our mortality and our need for grace: we are dust, and to dust we shall return.

The Three Pillars of Lent

  • Prayer: turning the heart more fully toward God.
  • Fasting: disciplining the body and resisting disordered desires.
  • Almsgiving: serving Christ in the poor and needy.

Living Lent Well

Catholics can live Lent through confession, daily prayer, Scripture reading, fasting, Stations of the Cross, works of mercy, and sincere examination of conscience.

Lent is not simply about giving something up. It is about making room for Christ and allowing His grace to transform the soul.
